Much of my work revolves around conviction formation theory. It investigates how convictions arise, stabilize, and sometimes fracture under different pressures, ranging from everyday practices like asking questions, counting and measuring, to formal reasoning in mathematics, science, and to leading a good life. I think of it as a well-bounded subdomain of philosophy with connections to several others, including epistemology, philosophy of science, and decision theory. For a long time, I was trying to understand how to orient myself without stable foundations, caught between skepticism and the need to act. Much of my work grew out of that tension, and continues to develop from it.
